Choosing Professionals

When you choose someone to perform a service or provide a product, you are in a very definite sense designing your wedding: The way your wedding celebration is perceived will depend on how well, and in what style, “your” pro’ s do their jobs.

Wedding professionals offer many price ranges and levels of quality. There are only three ways to find out who does what, how well, and for how much: Interviewing them, talking to references, and observation.

SEEING OR EXPERIENCING THEIR WORK

See them working, or the product of their work. This is the best way to judge whether your wedding day would benefit from this person’ s services. However, your attendance at a ceremony or reception, just to “ check out” the services, might not be welcome unless you know the couple. On the other hand, they might not mind at all. This isn’t a suggestion to be a party crasher — just an idea for dropping in and taking a look. Ask the professional you’re talking with if they will request permission for a quick look-see.

If you get to do this, be sure you aren’t wowed by the event itself. You have to consider how this person’ style and level of quality will fit into your wedding or your reception. They might be perfect for the one you’re seeing, but will they be perfect for yours?
